COMING SOON...
- Retrospective of Russian Perestoyka films
The Melbourne Cinematheque will screen a retrospective of Russian Perestoyka films starting June 30th until July 14th, including Tarkovsky's "The Sacrifice" and Sokurov's "The days of the Eclipse", as well as the Russian noirish rock-punk film "The Needle" and some other awesome films, giving you an insight into the USSR prior to collapse. Look out for "Little Vera" or "Freedom is Paradise" for the post-soviet realism and this weird weird time in the Russian film history, when some awesome films were made just before everything turned upside down and the dark ages of Russian filmmaking arrived in the 90s.
- The Russian Resurrection Film Festival
The 2010 Program features 17 new films, plus a World War II retrospective commemorating 65 years since the end of the War. Part of the War Retrospective will be timeless classics such as Tarkovsky’s award winning Ivan’s Childhood, Cannes Festival winner The Cranes are Flying and German’s anti-war masterpieces. Of the new films be sure to check out our World Premieres, Man at the Window and Parental Guidance, films which have not even been released in Russia yet! Then there is the historic epic Tsar, a lavish production about the reign of Russia’s infamous ruler Ivan the Terrible. It wouldn’t be a Russian Film Festival, if there were no deeply moving and emotionally driven dramas, so be sure to catch How I Ended Last Summer, One War and By the Rivers of Babylon. Hard Labor Vacation is a true Russian comedy, something that was hard to find in festivals gone by. And finally for something completely different be sure to see Russia’s latest fantasy action blockbuster Black Lightning and, for a REAL experience for kids and adults alike, no one should miss Belka & Strelka: Space Dogs in 3D – Russia’s first animated 3D film, which really is a lot of fun!
